NFL-2013-Season-Week-1

Since the AFL and NFL merged in the 1960s there have been certain football organizations that have separated themselves to be considered “the team of the decade.”  Here is the list of those 5 teams since 1960.

#1 1960-1970 Greenbay Packers

Considered the Lombardi era and Glory years for the Greenbay Packers.  The Packers won 5 World Championships in a 7 year span including the first two Super Bowls. They were led by future Hall of Famers’ Bart Starr, Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung, Forrest Gregg and Willie Davis.

#2 1970-1980 Pittsburgh Steelers

The most decorated NFL organization with 6 Super Bowl Trophies.  The 1970’s Pittsburgh Steeler teams won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years in the 70s, and produced one of the greatest defenses of all time with a front line known as the “steel curtain.” Led by Coach Chuck Nolan and QB Terry Bradshaw, the Steeler teams in the 1970’s were truly dominant.

#3 1980-1990 San Francisco 49ers

niners

My favorite decade not only because the 49ers won 4 Super Bowls, but because this was the decade yours truly was born.  Dominated by Michael Jackson and white pants, this decade saw the emergence of an NFL power house that would appear in 4 Super Bowls, winning each one and producing three of the greatest players in their position; QB Joe Montana, WR Jerry Rice, FS/CB Ronnie Lott.  Not to mention HOF coach Bill Walsh.

#4 1990-2000 Dallas Cowboys

cowboys

The 90s saw the surfacing of grunge, saved by the bell, and clock necklaces, oh and the Dallas Cowboys. How could they not be the team of the 90s with players like Aikman, Smith and “The Playmaker” Michael Irvin. Dallas Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls in the 90’s and if not for the 49ers would have won a couple more.  I wanted to put the Broncos here since they dominated the latter part of the 90s but with 3 Super Bowl Trophies the Cowboys edged them out.

#5 2000-2010 New England Patriots

bradyxNew England has arguably been the best franchise since 2000.  They have only missed the Playoff’s twice since then, and have won 3 Super Bowls.  They have arguably the greatest Head Coach and QB of all time in Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.  The Pats also appeared in 2 more Super Bowls where they lost to the New York Giants.  All in all they appeared in 5 Super Bowls in 10 years.  Pretty amazing.

So, who would win in a round robin tournament?
